I’ve been lifting weights, meal prepping, and staying active for the last 15 years. During most of that time, I was obsessed with building my physique – eat, sleep, train, repeat. Physically, I was in great shape. But during the process of achieving my fitness goals, my mental health suffered, as did my relationships, career, and spiritual connection.
What’s the point of building your body while having poor mental health and no spiritual purpose?
Building a strong, athletic, and aesthetic body is only a means to an end, not the end itself. I changed my habits and how I viewed self improvement, while challenging my own preconceived notions of what “fitness” is all about. I learned that there’s much more to health and fitness than building my body. Cultivating better mental health and a deep spiritual connection was essential to improving my quality of life.

Core Values
MindBodyPrime believes in the following six core values:

Mental Health
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 1 in 5 adults are living with a mental illness. Depression and anxiety are at an all time high. Furthermore, deaths of despair (suicide, drug overdoses, and alcoholic liver disease) are at an all time high. Instant gratification and pleasure-seeking is destroying our ability to enjoy life on life’s terms. For many people struggling with poor mental health, positive lifestyle changes can make all the difference.

Nutrition is King
Having a balanced diet full of functional foods is the most important variable for optimizing one’s health. Good nutrition is often the solution to many health problems. Food is like medicine, it can actually treat and prevent disease. Your diet affects your health and fitness more than any supplement or specific training program does. Limiting the amount of processed, or refined foods you eat will not only improve the way you look, but also how you think, feel, and act.

Training & Exercise
In order to build a strong, athletic, and aesthetic physique, you must commit to consistent exercise. Pushing your body to its limit helps you look and feel your best. Weight training is crucial for both building muscle and losing fat, which are beneficial for a number of reasons beyond aesthetic appeal. Exercise and working out strengthens your muscles, joints, immune system, cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and more.

Optimize Habits
Our days are made up of a collection of habits, many of which we don’t stop and think twice about. Unless we are intentional about eliminating negative habits and replacing them with positive ones, we are likely to continue doing the same things over and over again. Bad habits are thoughts and behaviors that may feel good in the moment, but end up hurting us in the long run. Humans have a natural ability to recover. Sometimes, all it takes is for us to eliminate those habits that prevent healing and growth.

Natural Supplements
The fitness industry is littered with all kinds of performance enhancing drugs. Over the past several years, there have been many PED-related deaths in the fitness industry. Although it may be tempting to reach for a quick fix, the reality is there’s no magic pill that gives you all the benefits without potential consequences. By staying natural for as long as possible, you’ll avoid negative side effects and preserve your health for years to come. Herbal, or botanical supplements can help to prime your mind and body without putting your health at risk.

Spirituality
God comes first in my life because without Him, I would not be alive today. Spirituality is deeper than religion. It’s about finding your true purpose and walking a righteous path. The word righteous means virtuous, or living a life according to principles and morals. Our world is full of distractions and ideologies that directly go against virtue. One of the best ways to fortify your spiritual connection is reading the word, along with daily meditation and prayer.
