How we got started

Hi, I’m David Chung, founder of MindBodyPrime. I created this platform to be the resource I desperately needed during my own transformation journey.

For nearly 20 years, I lived and breathed the bodybuilding lifestyle. From the outside, everything looked perfect. I was in incredible shape, training five days a week, eating clean, and getting compliments everywhere I went. People assumed I had it all figured out.

But the truth? I was miserable.

I was smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, drinking and using drugs. I had no social life because fitness and partying consumed everything. I used dating apps and adult content to fill the void.

I told myself I was “passionate” about health and fitness, but looking back, I realize it was an obsession masking deeper issues. I had developed body dysmorphia and no amount of social media validation or compliments could fill the emptiness I felt inside.

It looked like I was in the best shape of my life, but I was neglecting my mental health, spiritual connection and relationships with people in my life. I had built an impressive physique at the expense of building a life worth living.

The wake-up call

Everything came to a head in 2020 – on lockdown, with all the time in the world to think and ask myself some hard questions.

What was the point of all this? Why did I take everything to such extremes? I never won any shows or landed sponsorship deals. If I was honest with myself, I didn’t even enjoy the process as much as I claimed. I had created a box for myself and lived in it for years, unable to see beyond the next meal or training session.

That realization forced me to rebuild my entire approach to fitness, health, and life itself.

I quit using substances and going out all the time. I gave up watching adult content and meaningless dopamine hits from dating apps and social media. I started seeking God and building a spiritual foundation that gave my life actual meaning beyond what I saw in the mirror.

The journey wasn’t easy. In fact, things got worse before they got better. I fell off multiple times. In 2023, I hit a low point I hadn’t experienced in years, gaining 15 pounds of fat, losing a bunch of muscle and strength, and reverting to bad habits. But each setback taught me something crucial about sustainable change versus temporary motivation.

What I learned

Fitness and Health Are Not the Same

True fitness isn’t about having the perfect physique. It’s about building a strong mind, healthy body, and clear sense of purpose that work together as one. It’s about developing fitness habits that support your entire life.

Health is Multi-Dimensional

Fitness became too much about surface-level appearances and external validation. True health includes mental wellbeing, spiritual connection, relationships, career satisfaction, and how you feel about yourself.
